  2. and chemist, who in 1754 discovered carbon
  3. dioxide (which he called `fixed air'). By his
  4. investigations in 1761 of latent heat and
  5. specific heat, he laid the foundation for the
  6. work of his pupil, James Watt. Born in
  7. Bordeaux, France, Black qualified as a doctor
  8. in Edinburgh. In chemistry, he prepared the
  9. way for the scientists Henry Cavendish,
  10. Joseph Priestley, and Antoine Lavoisier.
